The Malaysian government has designated SIRIM Berhad as the national WTO/TBT Enquiry Point, with its functions being executed by SIRIM Academy. This positions SIRIM Academy at the forefront of managing enquiries related to technical regulations, standards, and conformity assessment procedures. SIRIM Academy plays a vital role in raising public awareness of Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) notifications, ensuring that the Malaysian public and industry stakeholders are informed of relevant updates. Additionally, the Academy manages Malaysia’s notifications to the WTO, coordinating and communicating national technical regulations or standards that could affect international trade. By providing critical technical support to the national TBT committee, SIRIM Academy ensures Malaysia's compliance with WTO requirements, promoting transparency and fair trade practices. This comprehensive approach not only facilitates smoother trade relations but also strengthens Malaysia’s position in global commerce.
The responsibilities of SIRIM STS as the national TBT enquiry point, include:
Responding to enquiries on technical regulations, standards and conformity assessment procedure.
We assist businesses and stakeholders in getting information regarding technical regulations, standards and conformity assessment procedures of WTO members.
Promoting public awareness of TBT notifications made to WTO
We facilitate access to proposed technical regulations and conformity assessment procedures of other WTO members for review and comment as a means to promote fair trade and reduce uncertainty for exporters. All WTO TBT notifications are disseminated to national stakeholders via a free, web-based e-mail registration system known as ePing. Stakeholders are encouraged to review notifications and the full texts associated with them using ePing. You can request for training on the use of ePing through email to tbt@sirim.my
Handling Malaysian notification
We assist Malaysia’s regulators in preparing and submitting notification on proposed technical regulations to WTO to ensure Malaysia’s obligations to TBT Agreement are met. We also assist in coordinating WTO members' comments/opinions on Malaysia's notification.
Providing technical support to the national TBT committee
We provide support and updates to National TBT Committee on matters relating to the implementation of TBT Agreement and Operation of TBT Enquiry Point.
